Wealth advisor

« Back to Glossary Index

An advisor who specializes in managing the wealth and financial affairs of high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth families. The advisor’s services are typically more comprehensive and holistic than just financial or asset management, encompassing multiple aspects of a family’s life with wealth.

A wealth advisor’s services typically include serving and/or overseeing most or all of the content domains in the Ten Domains of Family Wealth. The advisor is usually trained and experienced in either the Financial and Investment Management domain or the Estate Planning and Legal Issues domain, although some wealth advisors arise from other domains.

Job titles for this role vary depending on the organizational structure and culture of a firm. Common examples include relationship manager, senior client advisor, wealth strategist, client advisor, and managing director.

A family’s overall services are typically coordinated, managed, and monitored by a wealth advisor. Ideally, wealth advisors have skills to work closely with other professionals such as attorneys, accountants, estate planners, and family consultants to provide integrated and holistic financial advice.

Some wealth advisors achieve the breadth, depth, and experience to serve the most demanding category: integrated family wealth advisor. This type of advisor – sometimes called an expert generalist – understands the fundamentals of each domain but also has the project management, authority, and facilitation skills to lead a client relationship in a truly interdisciplinary fashion.
